Major responsibilities include: prepares patients for procedures; provides care for patients in recovery and actively participates in all Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities.General DutiesParticipates as a team member in support of the total peri-procedure processOrganizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case managementOrganizes nursing activities efficiently and effectivelyDelegates activities appropriate to the abilities of available staff membersConsiders cost containment by using supplies economically and in effective turnover timeAssists with supply, drug, and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availabilityIdentifies the patient and correct interventions according to policy/procedure and communicates such information to all members of the healthcare teamReviews patients' medical records/needs to plan care with other healthcare team membersProvides comfort and reassurance to patientMaintains patients' privacy and dignityExplains procedures and care to the patientAssists with the proper and safe positioning of the patientAdministers medication per order of physician and based on condition of patientMonitors patient condition and maintains accurate documentation pre-procedure, during procedure, and post-procedureProvides continuity of patient care by communicating with other peri-procedure care personnel and documenting records accordinglyResponds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physicianAccurately comprehends and interprets verbal orders and directionDocuments patient-care records and other forms accurately following policies and proceduresAccurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient's statusEffectively organized time, equipment, supplies and personnelUses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate careConfirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practicePre-Procedure DutiesMaintains order and cleanliness of the pre-procedure areaPerforms thorough pre-procedure patient assessment required in the outpatient settingAssists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient prior to admissionProvides pre-procedure instruction and explanation of patient rights and responsibilitiesDescribes the peri-procedure experience to the patient/significant other, including what to expect before, during, and after the procedure, and how the significant other will participateObtains pertinent patient records prior to patient's arrivalPerforms all pre-procedure testing (glucose or pregnancy testing)Reports all abnormal values to anesthesia provider/MDExplains informed consent for procedure, patients' rights/responsibilities, and pre-procedure/post-procedure instructionsObtains necessary signaturesInforms patient about routine care and procedures related to the peri-procedure experienceDiscusses all findings with anesthesia provider prior to anesthesia provider's pre-procedure evaluation of patientProvides comfort and reassurance to the patient and supports the patient's right to privacy, dignity, and confidentialityDocuments pre-procedure care according to policy/procedureEnsures that the patient's chart is complete on day before surgery is scheduledIntra-Procedure DutiesProvides moderate sedation for patients not receiving general anesthesiaAssists with patient care in an endoscopy room as neededPost-Procedure DutiesMaintains order and cleanliness of post-procedure areaPerforms safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate post-procedure/post anesthesia periodAssesses and documents the patient's physical and emotional status upon arrival in the recovery roomDocuments post anesthesia care and identity of second person in the recovery room during the patient's recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to approved policies and proceduresProvides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administeredMonitors patients and informs MD or CRNA of observed complicationsPerforms thorough post-procedure patient assessment prior to discharge of the patientAssists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation for dischargeDevelops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment dataReviews post-procedure instructions and prescriptions from the MD with patient and significant other and documents in patient's medical recordInforms patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning homeDetermines that patient/family understand conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate careProvides comfort and reassurance to the patient and promotes privacy and dignityRequirementsMust possess a High school graduate or GED certification, graduate of accredited school of nursing, RN with active license in appropriate state, CPR certification, IV conscious sedation training, maintain basic cardiac life support certification, Endoscopy experience, evidence of leadership qualities, and strong ethical and moral character references.
