fully integrated precision medicine company. Summary of Position
The Hospital-Based Histology Lab Aide III performs routine and
non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for
microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and
procedures. Works under direct supervision and follows standard
procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
Key Job Elements Collects all surgical specimens and transports
them from surgery to the lab, accessions, and notates all specimens
in logbook. Assists Interventional Radiologist with collection of
fine needle aspirations, accessions and labels specimens. Assists
in the collection of bone marrows and completes all associated
paperwork. Maintains inventory and orders all supplies for
pathology, frozen sections, and surgery (formalin, specimen
bottles, stains, etc). Assists Pathologist with frozen sections
(labeling and staining of slides). Gathers quality assurance case
information (slides, reports) each month on random and malignant
cases for review. Sends out blocks and slides when requested by
outside facility (eg. MD Anderson). Prepares send out cases and
paperwork for shipment to outside labs (renal biopsies, bone
marrows, peripheral blood smears, etc). Files all slides once final
reports are completed by the Pathologist. Maintains microscope
slide storage and discard slides after 10 year retention period.
Ensures all cytology case statistics are completed, monthly and
annually. Ensures all preventative maintenance (PM’s) are completed
on histology / pathology equipment Performs routine maintenance and
cleaning of equipment and troubleshoots minor equipment failures.
Documents remedial actions such as repairs or repeated tests.
Ensures Medical Records Department receives all pathology reports.
Faxes pathology reports to physician offices as needed. Maintains
pathology log books, daily, weekly and monthly. Maintains
diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient
labeling. Correctly prepares special stains and solutions.
Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match
paperwork (requisitions etc.) Records in laboratory logbooks all
slides and stains prepared daily. Logs appropriate information into
the surgical pathology / laboratory computer system. Follows
appropriate laboratory safety protocols. Adheres to laboratory’s
quality control policies and documents all quality control
activities. Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and
CAP regulations. Adheres to attendance and punctuality guidelines.
Qualifications Knowledge/Experience High School diploma or
equivalent required. 1 years’ experience in an anatomical pathology
laboratory. Demonstrate understanding of laboratory equipment
including, but not limited to, microtome, stainer/cover slipper,
slide labeler. Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced,
high-volume deadline driven environment. Ability to thrive in a
team and service oriented environment and must maintain a
professional demeanor in interactions with physicians and lab
personnel. All laboratory personnel is required to maintain
schedule flexibility and when problems arise, may be required to
work overtime. Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment
and perform sterile techniques as required. May be exposed to
hazardous waste material including stain waste (i.e., hematoxylin,
eosin, etc.) aromatic hydrocarbons (xylene), and other combustible
organics (i.e., ethyl alcohol and isopropanol). Lab Specific
Qualifications Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and
analytical skill to distinguish fine detail. Ability to tolerate
extensive periods seated and/or standing. Must possess ability to
perform repetitive motion. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. May
have exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and
bio-hazardous material/chemicals including formalin in the lab
environment. May be required to handle blood-borne pathogens and
general laboratory reagents; handle live human specimens, tissues,
